5 Ways to Clean a Microwave Oven

Sometimes when you’re in a hurry, it’s easy to look past cleaning the microwave oven. The next time you open it however, you’re harassed by the stink and the sight of stains. When left for long, it becomes more difficult to remove the grease, dirt, and food crumbs.

Here are five ways to clean your microwave oven without using a commercial cleaner.

1. Lemon

Squeeze a lemon into a bowl of water. Then drop the lemon in the bowl. Microwave for three to five minutes. Remember to use a microwave-safe bowl. When done, let the bowl sit for a few minutes before taking it out. Next, wipe the inside of the microwave with paper towels or a rag. You can also use orange or lime if you don’t have lemon.

2. Vinegar

Place a bowl of vinegar and water in the microwave and set the timer at three minutes. Some people advise to place a toothpick in the solution to let bubbles form on the mixture. When it is done, remove the bowl after a minute then wipe the inside of the microwave. Don’t forget to rinse the turntable.

3. Baking Soda

Mix baking soda in a bowl of water to deodorize the microwave. You can add a few drops of dishwashing liquid or vinegar or drops of lemon as well. Microwave it for less than three minutes, just enough to let it steam. Then take out the bowl and wipe the microwave with a rag or paper towels.

4. Dishwashing Liquid

Mix dishwashing liquid with water in a bowl. Microwave it for less than three minutes until it begins to steam. Let it sit for a few more minutes before taking the bowl out. Then wipe the insides of the microwave and rinse the turntable.

5. Moist Paper Towels

You can always wipe the stains after you use the microwave. That way, you will avoid having to deal with hardened dirt that are more difficult to remove. Moisten paper towels to wipe the inside of the microwave. You can also use a rag.

More Tips

You can mix any of the cleaning ingredients listed above. The toothpick in the vinegar on item 2 is just a precaution for overheating of the liquid.

Remember that the best way to keep it clean is to avoid making it dirty in the first place. Make sure to clean it after you use it (let it cool down though) or wipe the insides at least once a week if you’re too busy.

Always use food containers that are microwavable. Some food containers come with lids that are also safe to use. Placing a lid on will avoid spillage in the microwave and will save you time and effort.
